FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long do the students stay for?​

  • ​Usually between 1 and 3 weeks. It depends on the group

 
How old are the students?

  • ​Groups visiting primary schools are aged 9 to 12. Those visiting high schools are aged 14 to 17

 
Where do the students visit from?

  • ​GSI Only arranges groups from Japan​

 
Do I need a blue card?

  • ​Yes, we require all families to hold the blue card. Sometimes there are exemptions, please check with our staff

 
Who can host?

  • ​Anyone can host a student as long as they are willing and able to demonstrate that they will All good, haven't started cooking yet just about to start cooking offer a safe and welcoming environment for the students. And of course, if they are eligible for a blue card.

 
Do I need a child, or do I need my child to go to the host school to participate?

  • ​No, you do not need to have a child attending the school, or even have any children at all. Hosting is open to all members of the local community who are open to welcoming the students and including them in their daily lives.

 
What if the students get sick or injured?

  • ​You will be given a 24/7 emergency contact number during the student’s stay. You will also have access to a translator if need be. Please give us a call if your student is sick and we will manage the situation.

  • Should there be a serious injury or sudden medical condition, please call 000 first and then the emergency contact number.

 
Can the students share a room or with my child?

  • ​Yes, the students can share a room with your child.

 
How many students can I host?

  • We normally place one or two students per Homestay Family


What activities can I do with the student?

  • ​Picnic/ BBQ at parks, walking neighbourhood, bush walk, markets, Southbank, CBD, beaches, shopping centres, board games, sports, cooking, watching your child/ren’s sports events.

I don't speak the same language as the students. How can I communicate with them?

  • ​All students have a basic level of English and are able to communicate their needs. Often the bigger hurdle is their shyness. It's fine to use translation apps on your phone such as Google Translate. If you are really stuck and frustrated, please call the GSI Contact person for assistance.

 
What food can I give the student? 

  • ​You do not need to change your regular diet. The students are here to experience life with a family in Australia, this includes trying new food. We recommend that you discuss food with your students on the arrival day. Many families will take their student to the supermarket on the first day so that they can point out the things they like and don't like

This is my first time hosting, what do I do?

  • ​​Please read our Homestay Family Guidebook. Please contact us anytime if you have any questions or concerns before they arrive and especially during the tour. We are here to help. It is every bit as important that the Homestay Family enjoy this experience too
